When I first decided to start my business, I was lost. I had no clue how to start, what to do to attract clients, what to charge, how to market, etc. And don’t even get me started on the legal side of things! LLC, Inc… It was a lot to take in, sort through, and start up in order to do what I knew I wanted to do – help writers become published authors.

So how did I do it? Some of it I went blind and just did the best I could until I could do better. The rest, I sought help. Help from professionals as well as mentors – those who had been there before me. After all, there’s really no need to reinvent the wheel!

Once I had the basics down, I began the art of fine tuning. Truth be told, I’m still fine tuning. It’s a constant process, as your business evolves, as do you and your clients.

Why am I sharing this with you? Because as an author, like it or not, you are in business! I’m not a CPA or attorney, so I won’t go into all the legal stuff, but I will tell you that if you treat your authorship as a business, you will find that you have much more success!

Building a business does not have to be a full-time job. You don’t have to quit your day job in order to become a successful author. And, it can be oh so much fun!!

If you choose to LLC yourself, you may even receive some tax benefits in the way of business expenses (think: hiring a coach, cost of editing, publishing, book cover design, BOOKS, etc). Of course, talk with your CPA for details.

Part of having a successful business is knowing who your client (reader!) is. Knowing where they are, why they want what you’re selling, etc. Get in front of them! Having a clear marketing plan will help with this tremendously! Social Media, blogging, networking events, book signings – these are all great ways to get started. Track your sales. Know what’s working and who’s buying! Build relationships. You’ll be amazed when you realize how many people WANT to help you become successful!

You may not have thought you were starting a business when you decided to write your book. But if any part of you wants to see your book become successful, then a business owner you will be!
