Ok, a map may be a little outdated, but I bet you at least have your destination plugged into your GPS device, right? Is it possible to travel without directions? Absolutely! But, typically, it takes much longer, you encounter a lot of detours, and what should have been a pleasurable trip becomes nothing short of a nightmare. Why would you do that to yourself?
Why am I writing about traveling, maps and nightmares in an article meant for authors? Because marketing is the same way! Without a map (marketing plan), you may still reach your destination (book sales, speaking engagements, etc) but not without detours, bumps and a LOT more time!
While writing out a marketing plan can sometimes feel tedious and a waste of time, I promise you, it is not! Take an hour, 2 hours, a day – whatever it takes! – and put a plan in place! The best thing about marketing plans, is they are fluid. So, as your business changes, as you grow and change, so can your marketing plan.
I recommend starting simple. Think of things you already know how to do, that you can easily incorporate into your business as an author. Write those things down! Next, consider the amount of time you have to devote to each task. You don’t want to overwhelm yourself here…if you do, you will feel as though your plan isn’t working and you’ll quit way too early into the process. So, you have the tasks/activities you know how to do and you know how much time you have to commit to those tasks. Now, take action!
Get those tasks on the calendar – but remember! A calendar is only useful if you use it!
As you work through your tasks each day, you will get a feel for how well this plan is working. Give yourself time before deciding if the plan is working or not; then adjust! Have you learned new skills that you could apply? Are there activities you WANT to do, but don’t yet know how? Add them to your plan and seek help from someone who can either teach you, or do it for you.
I say it a lot and I’ll say it again because it’s very important to drive this point home: Being an author is a business! It’s YOUR business. And marketing is the most important piece of your success puzzle. Having a plan is essential to effective marketing. Take the time to put it in place; then put it into action!
